Listen, with chaos and harmony contrapuntal,
with our knowing over all the earth everything
that happens, the open throated eddies, the one

man moving forward, and we three interrupting,
piling jetties to his current, breaking against
the story's wave. With him on course, hemmed at the mast,

and our wide intermezzo, wanting to knock down, uproot,
start diluvials, windy frets and choral fortes,
each voice, in jubili, departing from the tune.

All the while wanting this wreckage, the adagios

with men's bones, craving the tethered hero,

his wrists throbbing under tight-bound cords,
the slender joints reddening, each of us hoping
to catch his other-blooded kind of time.

Still, of course, it was a call without answer,
though we kept up the scattering, scuttling (we thought)
his half-expected arrival, as if his longing

to know could match the longing to be known,
as if it could be enough—or too much—
our trebled echoes, underscores of everything

to come… Then we saw the white staves of his ribs,
infrangible beneath the steady jib, and the men's
ears mute with wax, arms bent to oars, to history,
