Bottleneck or gateway? Where the Swan
& Canning Rivers merge, or as the storm
approaches—a throng of poltergeists

with wicked notions—clash.
Hypnotized or possessed
they hesitate, & then suddenly

erupt as if struck by an irrepressible
freedom, a sundering of all morality.
Clouds hang over the city like strips

of graying flesh, the storm's breath
blown over the waters sulfurous
& angry. Beneath the bridge

the irregular wooden pylons quiver,
& baitfish swim with a wind
that rushes against the tide

thundering through the channel, drawn by
the distant conjectural sea.
These silver minnows remain stationary

by swimming furiously, glittering brightly
just below the surface; medusas
camouflaged brown & khaki

toss past like wind-struck parachutes.
Blowfish race through the school
of baitfish & eat voraciously. On the decking

deadly litters of corpses from the previous night's
fishing. Blowfish receive no mercy.
Those baitfish are lures as the storm approaches,

their brilliance in the murky waters
enough to drag the poet down. Their beauty

with electricity—blue light arcing out
over the city, sparking of rods
