for john Swan

I'm here to see this model of the spheres
where our planets make a cosmos that just fits
inside the circular room; a folly
of the Enlightenment. But your bout with death
is what I'm thinking of, resistlessly as gravity
holding you like a moon in thrall to its

sovereign mass while we, a little out of breath,
like lightweight meteors flit and skitter,
trail sparkles of reflexive fear across
the dark. And you, not lonely and (you said) not bitter
and not (I thought) afraid, too soon will make
your move. But enough of melancholy!

I'm here with an old friend. We're out
co show me a good rime, and music plays,
if not the music of the spheres; some moody violins
romance us. A button beckons, red, ablaze
with inner light. I couch it, and the dim-bulb sun
goes even dimmer. We sit back. The show begins.
