Trees have fallen every which
way, crossing themselves

as we pass. We break
twigs with our boots,

spider webs with brows.
We think we’ve come for winter

wood, saws in hand. But what
we hear is what the creek postpones,

singing along stones.

Our wagon full, we take
the long walk back,

glance up at a bold
checkmark of geese

revising the sunset. Gold
flings itself in our eyes,

the same gold that fills
the fireplace tonight,

warming us twice.
