Nobody blames you for hurrying
Back to Paris, and missing
Most of what takes place onstage.
When Father sends his servant after,
To report on how you’re acting,
We feel sorry for you — and your father,
And for the spy as well, perhaps:
After all it must be tedious.
The arras reverses; the seams and threads
Grow evident. Coming home,
You’ve been freed into hatred so pure
The whole peninsula looms
Sudden and clear. No longer
To have to listen to those who claim
They know, those who’ve learned
By playing, until you play fair.
