Issue 72, Winter 1977
Leona heard the engines again, the great
cranes outside her window breaking up the old history,
the bulldozers striking layers of rock that ran
beneath her house, shaking the pictures on the walls.
The great machines had rolled down the road at dawn,
slow sure creatures landing from the future
on ribbed rubber feet, beginning to break Leona’s life
into clusters the awaiting years could handle.
