—A sunlit lot. Clear-cut.
Slash smoulders. Crabs of a beer-
colored grass. A torn-up midden heap,
         its tiny lusterless bits
                of oyster shell. One lady-thin
                translucent alluvial fan

         of scallop. A doe gone
off to moss, snake-work of back,
a scatter of ribs.
                                Dear bones. I hate
that I love. What have I done?
(A blank slate, he said. But I can’t!
                I told him—this is what I want.)
