Our pilgrim’s progress is reported in fits and starts
as he makes his way in a hot-air balloon toward Valparaiso.
His letters say nothing of the sky, only the long burn
of hydrogen, felicity, the vertigo of momentary disbelief.
His descriptions of the landscape are a Rorschach
by which we deduce his moods: he must remain
if not happy at least unmoved by regret.
