It was a hard winter for the old eskimo,
Sent out on an ice floe by those he loved
More than life, more than seal blubber,
More than the split color of his sled dogs’ eyes,
Polar green, polar blue, more than his sweet,
Smoke-haired, slimy wives in the ink-dark igloo
Under a bear-hide with all their bristling,
Scouring holes that felt and smelt like anchovies,
