While you are sleeping
in a bed tethered to the wall
by the cord
of a nurse’s call button,
I count my fingers.
They outnumber the days you have left
to spend in this room,
so I busy them with
arranging the cards
from the people who want you
to be a teddy bear with
a sprained ankle and
get well soon.
Late afternoon sun
shines through the plastic bag
that drips you drops of morphine,
