I was home early, had
this beef with someone awful
at the office. No one was home.
The dog had gone on a day trip;
a note said V had gone off
visiting her brother in Sharon.
I went out back, unfolded
my Taiwan lounge with the blue
tubing that sagged; lay back
in some maple shade and started
to catch up on James Schuyler,
which was encouraging. Yes,
for a man who writes about
loneliness so much
his poems are full of people.
Friends at least, if not
faithful lovers. Someone
is always calling, or being
remembered for having called.
Soon I was dropping off,

easy enough to do
on Wednesday at three, more likely
closer to four, perhaps
from being bushed then maybe
just strategic withdrawal
from stress, the trivial little
wants of everyday life.
I felt drops, fat raindrops,
splat on my chinos and
I lurched inside. By the time
I came to my senses, I heard
downpour drumming outside.
