In paradise the smell of engine oil
Will undercut the roses. The carburetors
Of Eden will distract the seraphim.
Those jukebox lutenists in phosphate trees.
The vaporous hush of essences
At the pinging pump will cauterize
The contusions of love, and the houris all
Will bask on velveteen and Naugahyde
Bucket seats in a Russian Leather breeze.

The camshafts of heaven will outlive the axle trees.
The music of the manifolds will gown the clouds.
I see the black-seamed fingertips of the mechanics
On the copper-colored keys of their accordions
And hear the ditties of the pit stops pool.
The music of paradise will be shin-sleeved and cool
And brandish red bandannas of rough flannel.
The integrity of metals will marmorealize
Fleeting affections yet be various.
Amber oils will coronate chrome impulses
And be steadfast at last.
