Sicily

Had there been clouds, they would have shifted
As slowly as my thoughts. But no, the sky bubbled
Into lidless blue, leaving ample
Room for the effortless shuffle of sensation.
Sure successive waves licking me pebble-
Smooth and small. Eyes closed, untroubled
By flesh, I contracted to my soul’s
Dense kernel.
The high sun fired the cliffs
Until they stood like a cracked ochre cake
Shelving over us—a lone family
Baking with beached sea urchins
By the low-tide line. From yards off
Along the strand, a stranger would see us
Bend and ripple in the heat waves,
Stippled streaks of skin cooked
Raw, blushing rose.
