after Al-Sanawbari (died 943 in Baghdad)

Winter sweetens my house with its fragrance.
What could be better than a winter-sweetened house?

In platters heaped with food and in my good roof.
In plump cushions, in drapes brocaded with dark,
I find snug and continual pleasure against the cold.
And there is pleasure also in the courtyard pools
And their elegant pearling meander
Through gardens of grace, especially
On days when the sun-dimming clouds
Hammer against my walls.
And the drainpipes' voices, thick with slush.
Struggle to mimic the long-necked mandolins.
Then from within my house I watch other
Low-hanging clouds, pond-mesmerized.
Whittle slim-stemmed flagons from their subtle waves!
