Though reverence may not save us
we must carry ourselves
with reverence.
                                 A song
at pale twilight of love
and mourning fills our eyes
with easy, pleasing tears
and suspect judgment, until
malicious laughter erupts
inside the song.
                                 At noon
a piping from deep shadow
even in the city
a piping from green tangles
of boxwood and honeysuckle,
a haunted piping: the mind
drifts and we dreamily
search upward for the moon,
then quickly walk away,
head down and face averted,
followed by judgmental
laughter, malign delight.
You may shake your head
and say no,
