in the basin of water from which it stared
up at you as you left the room,

strangers coming up dazed from the river
waved to you through the deep sunlight.

and the grim young women in heels and shorts
pushing the empty stroller around
the parking lot in diminishing circles,

and the man in the cardboard box striding into
traffic swinging a plastic lantern, like Diogenes,
and the blind vendor in the skullcap roasting
