Between my back fence and the drainage ditch,
the county’s
                             no-man’s land, I’d
been chopping brush and forking out
thick roots,
                             expanding my garden, a little
                                                                                                extra space
for bush beans and
                                              some okra. Had been.
But now I’ve stopped.
                                                    A copperhead
is striking at
                                    my boots, a light
                                                                                tap, tap
tap, tap
                    that I can barely feel.
I don’t move. Watch.
                                                    I watch.
