In the rose and pale gold of
                                                             declining light
I brace my stiff feet on dry leaves, and grasp
the trunk
                         of a green oak. Embracing it,
I sway, yield to its
                                              tough-limber stem.
planted.
                                                                           Then, looser,
I push,
                   pump, pull,
                                               wrestling with a rough, sprightly
young oak, thick as my wrist and twelve feet high.
It pushes back.
                                      It loves a tussle! Clear sap
wells from the river back, taproot, and trunk,
and tingles through
                                                my body, toe
