I would like to say he came back.

At the same table, in the same taverna
he waited for the boy to return.
At the table every night with cognac and cigar,
reading the newspapers, folding and laying them
in his lap, spreading them out and reading again.
Waiting for him, almost a stranger
whose lean hard arms and straight back he felt.

He gazed at the doorway.
