FEATHERS

Sitting up, nude, shrouded in twisted sheets, muffling
the travel alarm, she touches him, asking
if feathers have no pigment, that is, if they are clear
when you grind them up, are their pieces like prisms,
or are the colors a construct of the pattern
in which the pieces weave together?
He has answered
this before: Hues are always only order.
They are how we know they are beautiful.

In the bedding, the mottled down mats.
A few quills poke through the threadbare linen.
He has taken his important papers
to the convention center. His whiskers
cling to the shell-shaped basin. She returns to him
impressed in the mattress and smoothes her legs
against one another. Essential and practical,
like sex or eagles devouring human hearts.

DREAMS

That they come to us lit by light and shadowed with shade
sent not to earth, but through it—
that they travel poorly from their time into ours—
that they become, once sunk into vaguery, pure notion,
the dark dress by which one remembers some insane ancestor—
that they consist of image drawn from absent senses,
from the radii of sight, from clocks not round
with hours, from scenes which threaten to be—
we wake within one, of one thing convinced,
looking to a garden through a window drawn blind,
raising our heads to sound, a dog somewhere distant,
scattering doves brownly gathered, dividing the sky.
