after Karl Blossfeldt, Working Collages (2001)

Let’s suspend for the moment
strictly human concerns, remove
ourselves from those contexts

in which paranoid fascination
is the spontaneous response
to the other’s soliciting gaze.

It’s hard at first. One wants
to be noticed or at the very least
seen. But when even a stranger’s

face has too much history about
the eyes and mouth—when this fact
itself develops a history, you might

open the book: Ferns I, II, and III;
Umbellifers and love-in-a-mist;
Tips of twigs
; pods, cones, petals

arrayed in grids, some dissected
so far from their given forms
as to seem mineral, or animal.
