The workers labor in the emptied lot,
the sweat of summer’s aluminum noon
tempering the dry glint of pick and shovel
in the half-dug dirt of the new foundation,
the pressed layers where the past slept in oil and slate.

They turn and work in the crucible of the city
straining their ropes of muscle to complete
The undreamed equation of renewal and decline
unsolved by the architect purged of shale and soot
at his clean table far from this brute whorl of activity.

No one looks up, the towering cranes of crossed iron,
the crucifix and curtains in the empty windows
unreal above the protest of the steel and stone,
the city’s receding fan of standing buildings slowed
and emptied by the hungers of this yawing pit of generation
