He had not been desperate when he answered her ad in the paper. He had already lost two other sublets- the second because the tenant felt that he had an untrustworthy face, and told him so. Plus., he thought, most people don’t warm up to the name Vince. But he had plenty of money now and if everything fell through in New York he would fl to Wyoming, a place he always thought he would like. All he wanted, really was a change of scenery, a place to spend the summer.
So when she first invited him over to see the apartment Vince was very casual and tried to enjoy himself. It felt something like a first date, with her pouring him wine and sitting him down on the couch, and he allowed himself to get a little drunk and charming. The living room faced the rear court of the building, and the windows were open to the summer air.
He complimented her on the bookshelves which lined the room and were clearly custom-built but though it was all spacious and nicely furnished he really wasn’t that imp…
