Rome in November evening many thanks
the smooth marble reef the cold tile-faces
the spray of lights before the gate closes
the sound that frozen glasses make when shattering
the singsong tune that from guitars keeps wringing
before more heads and tails into coins are pressed
down at the coliseum with lances of cypress!
the woodworm sits beside me at the table—
how juicy a leaf looks that caterpillars nibble?
and autumn in a land of fog the gaudy tatters
of forests that are soaked by great rain showers
whether it be a screech owl’s longing for death
the dragons that in the marsh’s warmth perish
the blackened sail the ominous call of ravens
the north wind over the water deviating
the ghostly ship the hillsides and the meadows
buried under rubble the house the willows
penniless and weeping at the stream of coffins
its madness from the depths they keep recovering
Forever and No More mixed as a single drink
your pained heart glorifying every sorrow
destroyed completely lost lovesick you sink…
