The boy had a group of freckle-faced friends
Who lived nearby. He gave them names, taught them games.
They loved him. He had a sweet nature, sang show tunes
In the cat with Mama while Daddy drove grimly on,

Turned sullen after the divorce. Couldn’t sleep alone
Or with the lights off. More stoical, too: didn’t cry when
Stunned by a softball in the face. He now had a secret life
And closed the door of his room while he dressed.
