Alas that ever I did sin! It is full merry in Heaven.
—The Book of Margery Kempe, 14th century

Think of Margery Kempe, who laughed and cried
while worshipping along the grassy walks,
who sought salvation with an open heart
and nothing but her mouth turned up or down,
to prove her faith to a bishop or crown.

Did she carry a staff? Wear otter shoes?
And a hat of brick filled with tousled sweat?
Did she carry a purse with a barb or pearl?
One might guess that the agony that swirled
in the midst of her mirth was her bond with the world.
