It was not unlike a raccoon
when I found it by the highway.
Clearly it was special,
a specimen, unfortunately dead, of a new animal.

The slaughter of such a creature
was incommensurable injustice.
Its fur is a new shade of brown
and its tail could tell us many things.

Granted the poor beast was horribly mangled
but it was, nonetheless, a real discovery.
As I set it on my backseat in a grocery bag,
I thought of my sudden compatriots,

the great men of evolutionary science.
Driving home, the new creature I had been
lucky and perceptive enough to find
pulled at my heart, hard as a magnet.
