The only heir, memory cannot bless any new deed
With the marks of management, transported
To newer keys into worldly ends. Even a trusting
Parent fails to hurry toward the crying self
Wanting to recapture every story, every tale of sighing.

Once ashore on the mind of dilemma, only charity
Makes us arise out of the seas of dullness and
Unwanted fortune. Yet a good dullness approaches
Us without warning, and we remember the excitement
Of a sad desperation flaming from St. Elmo's fire.

We think Ariel or Caliban will take our imprisoned souls
Into a state of art, but when we awake from the past
The now frightens us into slaves like night urchins.
Stuck in rock on an island of our choosing
Where we attempt to give purpose to our words and actions.
