At night my stomach hurts.
In the dark crumbling arch
of a door a stray dog barks.

A drift of leaves bursts
like a bank of birds,
like the stone foal of your thought.

And we say to see with new eyes.
Buried in blue,
choked in the throttle of color.

This I could never spell with your hands:
the body too in revolt.

As one with whom I’ve come to live,
turbulent poplars toss in the wind—
and the leaves do fall and cut their margins
