My body is so much bigger, and I am always wanting
to write a memoir. The bow at the end of class
is called a “reverence.”
Things keep waking me, haunting
my sleep. After acknowledging the teacher, we may pass
from the room
, I am amazed to have reached this stage.
first giving, perhaps, a smattering of applause; then
Has my face caught up with, surpassed, my age?
rushing to the changing-room, to turn again
into little girls,
My body is fuller, and seeks repose,
taking the spiked hairpins from their places.
Sleeping and waking are two sisters, pulling up close;
and striking the pleasant attitudes from our faces,
with their arms around each other, smiling for
the camera; chattering of boys and clothes and school
dances
, even though inside me rages rage and war.
