This shall say what I was
                —John Donne

He is waiting for the story to begin:
a road through the meadows, a ship’s light, all those
signals in the grass he has to learn
to read, when the moment comes to be a man;

only a boy, but he’s certain the future will come,
event giving way to event, and the black
enigma of a person showing through,
not me, but someone else: that narrative.
