The mice are back;
                             I leave them
crusts and pine nuts
                             on the kitchen
counter,
               leave them
treats they sometimes
               miss,
                             experiment
with milk and berries,
spelt
               and pumpkin seeds.
I like it
               that I have
                             such neighbors
—not
               invisible
                             but moving back and forth
between their world
                             and mine
discreetly;
               I enjoy
their table manners
               when I catch a glimpse
of something reddish-gray
