after Bishop

If you could only hear the chatter,
you would know how I was misled
earlier this morning when I woke
to the sound through open windows, ebbing
and flowing in the subtropical dampness,
of conversation in an unknown tongue.
It amazed me that my aunt’s neighbors
had so much to say when the sun
had barely risen. But what language
were they speaking? I sat up
and listened, straining to recognize a word
or two. And then I knew—this
was the language of parrots. As I write,
they are still calling, one
to another, invisibly, from tree to tree.
Only slightly less foreign, the English words
fluttering with Australian accents
from a house below make me nostalgic
for the one language that held together
the bricks of the city—or at least
for the idea of one.
