You could see windstorms and a piece of floating string
making their way to the school
for hours—you could watch the sun,
and the teacher agreed. She had
no ideas either. Everything that happened
took a week in that air, in that frame
of bulletin boards and tiny fluorescent lights,
but when you found a pencil at least
that’s what you had, a pencil. They planned the day
for some hours but usually they just said, “Be here”.

A plant grew quietly on the windowsill, and everybody
knew it was a good soldier and they nodded hello
if they were standing there and thought it was trying
hard. Where was Hawaii, or any worldly place?
