The 31st of August 1914
I left Deauville just before midnight
in Rouveyre’s little car

Counting his chauffeur we were three

We said farewell to an epoch
Furious giants were rising all over Europe
Eagles left their eyries before the sun rose
Voracious fish surfaced from the abyss
The peoples of the earth rushed to find out who they were
The dead shivered with fear in their dark dwellings

The dogs were barking toward wherever the frontiers were
I carried within me all the battling armies
I felt them rising up in me and felt the countries they were moving through
With the forests and happy villages of Belgium
Francorchamps with the Eau Rouge and the mineral springs
The route invasions always take
Railway lines where those who were going to die
Saluted one last time this colorful life
Deep oceans where monsters were waking
Inside old shipwrecks on the bottom
Heights unimaginable where men fight
Higher than where the eagle flies
Man fights against man up there
Only to fall suddenly like a shooting star
I felt within myself new beings with new capacities
Building and arranging a new universe
A businessman of an unspeakable opulence and prodigious size
Laid out an extraordinary display of goods
Gigantic shepherds led
Enormous silent flocks pasturing on words
And all the dogs were barking at their heels
