Men of the future remember me
I lived in the days when there stopped being kings
They died one by one they were silent and sad
Courageous in life in death they became divine

There is nothing like Paris at the end of September
Every night turned into a vine
Spreading tendrils of light through the town
While songbirds drunk on my song
Pecked at stars that waited for dawn

One night returning to Auteuil
Along the dark and empty quay
I heard a voice singing over and over again
Until other voices joined it all along the Seine
And from a distance sang their praise and their rage

I stood and I listened to those voices and those chants
Join together to make the song of France

Cities of France and Europe and the world I am thirsty for you
My throat is deep come pour yourselves in me

I saw Paris already unsteady on its feet
Pulling down the singing grapes from their trellis
And dancing on them to make still more wine

And the northern cities shouted happily

Here we are O Paris the waters of life
The virile cities where metal saints
On gothic factories give their sermons and sing
And our chimneys spew their seed into the cloud
Factories foundries workshops
Where workers stripped to the waist
Assemble the real for so much an hour
We give all this to you

The Moselle and the Rhine join each other at Koblenz
While Europe prays night and day
At Auteuil I let myself linger along the quay
While hours like leaves kept falling
And I listened as the rivers’ song
Carried the prayer of the rootstock along
