Basin and Range

I had a way with dirt, loved
—flying over Tucson, Albuquerque, Boulder—
              to see it mounded, shrugged
from mountain rock, like coats from shoulders.

True, a ruse of early anger found its source
in grace so total it encompassed raggedness.
I knew then volume and light actually hurt,
but felt the pain as vulnerary force.
