The first word I loved was crepusculo.
How long it took, one u mimicking the other,
volleyed in the syllables’ canyon.
As a translation, twilight sufficed: twin is
looking out, looking in, seeping rose
until night called in its chits.

My second love, pardes, the origin of paradise,
borrowed from an ancient, civilized tongue.
It will not be given back—
the word has traveled.
Gan Eden, says Maimonides, is not
a place, but a state.
