It's less a memory than a darker shade
of feeling that comes back-and less a feeling

than an air of timelessness, the lull
that sets in just before the swell of evening .

Luminous cargo, luminous tributaries
sweeping past the plate-glass windows of

the hometown dives where I worked . . . I'd stand in the
   front—
in a starched white shirt-and felt the bones of my face

burn up in the cast of sunlight-suspensions of dust—
as the blazing webs of lives belled out like sails

in imperceptible drafts. Sometimes it seemed
the places themselves were dreams: like dreams that place

the drinker in a deeply familiar scene,
the low light kindling toward a transitory

equilibrium between the room—
subaqueous, companionable—and

the world ... which calls him, calls him, woos him, till
the heart forgets why it was clenched in the first place.

That was my favorite hour-the balance point—
the momentary gradients of dusk
