I looked long and long at my mother's miniature
The next year,
the year I lived on the east side
Of the church building that overlooked the Campo dei Fiori.
Her body had entered the oak grove.
By the river of five-sided leaves she had laid it down.
Hummingbird hard at the yellow shells of the sour grass.
Red throat in the light vouchsafed,
then quick hum to a marigold.

The poem is a self-portrait
                                                                      always, no matter what mask
You take off and put back on.
As this one is, color of cream and a mouthful of air.
Rome is like that, and we are,
aken off and put back on.
