One morning in June above Yosemite Valley, John Muir learned
the “right manners of the wilderness.”
Walking out to sketch from the top of North Dome,
he followed his borrowed St. Bernard
to the edge of a meadow
and encountered, he says, his “first Sierra bear.”

I like to picture that study in nature — artist and dog
poised in amazement at the heavy muscling,
the cinnamon elegance of pelt.
So easy to imagine the bear’s huge grace—
sharp snout nuzzling air,
the small ears
twitching—you can almost understand an urge
to watch him run.
