for Rick Bass

Halfway home to the warm trailer, I stopped on a ledge
above the Clark Fork. Clear sky
brightened a loose change of stars,
and far out, the valley opened a white hand.
No hurry, the rest
of the route easy, plowed roads,
a few dozen tubes in the wilderness.

I took a long piss over the rocks, the cold steam
rising at my feet,
and below me in the splintered river,
and ice floe
drifted like a barge. Across that floe
something paced white against white.
