In a loft facing a parking lot
on a main drag of the tired
southend, lives my friend
     the fellow artist stumbling thru
dope-filled mornings he’s
                 not ready for:
dried-up paint pots, brushes
           stiff’ning by     has managed
(Mercury, ’by nite’) to avoid the eight to five
he produces us no pictures
