What They Had Come For
Getting ten thousand feet “closer to nature”

they had seen their breath in mid-July.
Then, getting thoroughly wet,
she kneels in deep moss
to drink from the stream,
her curled hands numb as a tin cup
against her cheeks as icy water
runs down the over-heated skin
between her breasts.
He sinks both his thumbs hard
into the hot cheeks of an orange
and pulls the large-pored skin away
piece by piece.
