A Refrain

Because we thought we had to know everything
About each other, only did already
Without realizing it, a sense of false
Expectation and foreboding, abstract and natural.
Began to alter the very look and sound and feel
Of what we said and did, earlier each day
Until now nothing but what confirms something
Someone knew or suspected all along is left for us.
And we stay where we are, in this place we have lived
For so many years, looking out the window at the water
And the city skyline in the distance. That is the refrain
Of a song that runs throughout the summer.
Of the girl sleeping in the sun and the face reflected in the bus window.
