Each evening now the ash blue flame
swept from my fingertips
climbing its gas ladder up the flue
burns more the color of that single earring,
one of the pair your father

left you, lost in a crack now
somewhere under my bed
lodged out of reach —its jade bead
the size of a bird’s eye among the splintered
rubble of wrenched beams
