lake

ond oðer swylc ut of-ferede lað-licu lac.
Beowulf, c. 1000, Oxford English Dictionary

To present an offering. Or, the offering itself.
A drink of water. A glass held up: an honor, a toast.
So in rivers and brooks of tide the lake comes calving,
stressed and breaking across the stony beaches, in light-
stunned whitecaps it comes in crawls; and recedes, and recalls.

To jest, to joust.
They are not gulls. They are lake-terns, suffering
and triumphing the strange currents of air above the water,
and in fetches and darts fishing from just beneath
the surface. A twitch of eye and they rise, quarry-
        carrying there, there, and there.
