A Note on Stefan Mihal
The character of Stefan Mihal has functioned partly as a red herring and partly as a doppelganger for photographer Michals. His name derives from Michals’ middle and last names in their original Czech form.
His “birth” is coincident both in time and place with those of the photographer yet it is uncertain whether the two have in fact met. Duane is ambivalent on this subject, but he has said that if the two of them ever met, it would be like matter meet-ing anti-matter: there would be an explosion.
He views Stefan as one of his own untried possibilities as a person, often conceiving of him as an insurance salesman (to whom chance has assigned a different role from that of Michals). He works as an emblem of Michals’ persistent questioning of reality.
