Dim sow is an anagram. They tell me,
"Pigs are the most intelligent of the domestic animals,"
domestic animals a way of phrasing it to leave out
primates and cetaceans (do swim is another anagram).

"Cats," they say, "are less intelligent."
But next to pigs, cats look like geniuses
for comfort, diet, incidence of systematic slaughter,
and, despite the rash of neuterings,
loud caterwauling sex. Nevertheless I nod,
"You don't say. Pigs!"

Intelligent, they say. They don't say smart.
This week, in conference with my son's new teacher,
I said, "He's a bright kid."

"More than that," she told me,
"your son is a gifted child."
