Our friends die with us
    and the sky too
in huge swatches, and lakes, and places
we walked past, just going and
                coming.
The spoons we ate with look dim, a little deadened
in the drawer. Their trips to the mouth
forlorn, and the breath caught there is
               fogged to a pewtery smudge.

Our friends die with us and are thrown in because we
used them so well.
But they also stay on earth awhile like the abandoned
huts of the Sherpas on a mountain that doesn’t
     know
it’s being climbed. They don’t fall down all at
     once.
               Not like his heart
fell down, dragging
the whole gliding eternity of him out of sight.
